And I'm embarrassed to admit, at first I had no clue there even was a flood. Why? No TV in the house...and I was deep in revisions, so deep I stayed off the net completely. It was only when I got back online, onto Facebook, that a friend in Tennessee mentioned the flooding. You can imagine, I was flooded with guilt.
Well, now there is something we can do about it! Authors Vitoria Schwab, Amanda K. Morgan, and Myra McEntire have put together an AMAZING auction called Do the Write Thing. So far, the items up for bid include:
- 30 minute phone calls with literary agents (Chris Richman or Michelle Wolfson)
- Query Critique (from agent Mary Kole or author Hannah Moskowitz)
- Critique of pages (from Brian Farrey, the acquisitions editor of Flux or Josh Adams of Adams Literary)
- Custom book trailer
- Autographed books
- And so much more!
New prizes are added daily. You have only three days to bid (it's easy - you bid in the comments.)
Now I must say that Nashville astounds me. They have really come together as a community to get through this. But there has been billions of dollars worth of damage with very little news coverage, and they need our help.
I'm going to get brave and go bid on an item - right now. I hope you'll find it in your heart to do the same. (And I believe donations are still being accepted!)
Spread the word! Use the tweetie at the top of the blog post. =)

Wow, Suzette. That video was so powerful - thanks for sharing it. It's sad that more people are aware of who was voted off Dancing with the Stars than about this disaster. I'm off to check out the auction.
The video made me cry and I've been seeing these pictures all week since I live in Nashville. Let me tell you, the community is rallying. One news station did a telethon last night and raised $1.7 million (yes, million). Another station has been doing mini telethons all week long and has been averaging around $100,000 per night. Still, those amounts are just a small portion of what is needed to help people recover from this devastating weather event - not only in Nashville, but across the midState area.
Every $1 raised does some good for someone, somewhere.
Thanks for linking to Do the Write Thing. I've linked to it on Facebook, where I had posted the same video yesterday. We're just trying to get the word out, whatever way we can about the overwhelming, almost surreal, devastation that is impacting so very, very many people.
S
Scott, you were the Facebook friend I mentioned in my post. I am so glad you told me - and so sorry I was so out of the loop!
Thanks so much for your comment. And thanks to you, Kristi, for heading to the auction.
And thanks to all who leave comments and pitch in!
It's comforting to see people coming together to help.
I totally just bid on the Nascar thing! What an inspiring thing for people to do. I LOVE the writing community!
That totally made me cry. What incredible people live in Nashville. I'm proud of the writing community for providing a way we can help them!
Wow, there wasn't much coverage about it. I'll run check out the items to bid on. Way to go writing community!
Excellent idea. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to have to go bid on something.
Thanks for spreading the awareness Suzette, this is so tragic but it does help to see so many writers trying to help.
I can't afford to bid right now but I was going to send some used books. I better go check to make sure that won't just be a burden. Maybe I can just donate some money instead.
Today's guest bloggers are Lisa and Laura Roecker!
I TRIED to bid on the Nascar thing. IT won't let me.
Suzette - it's hard to be in the loop when the national news barely reported the story at all. If you blinked during a newscase, you missed the coverage. CNN and a few other channels have devoted more airtime to the story. I just think it's sad that a tragic event like this flood is (perhaps 'was' since the writing community and others are now stepping forward) being overlooked.
So, thanks again for doing this blog post and linking to Do the Write Thing. : )
I plan to find something to bid on too. This is the greatest idea!! Thanks, Suzette.
Happy Mother's Day and have a great weekend! :-)
Thanks for spreading the word! It's so nice to see the writers taking up the cause!
The situation in Nashville is just heartbreaking. It's so overwhelming to see the damage and hear the stories. And it's so nice to see so many people helping them out. Awesome.
Hey Suzette. This is so awful. Sometimes I think I live under a rock. I was born in Tennessee and didn't even know about this. I linked your post to my blog to spread the word. Great post!!!
Thank you all - your generosity and support are amazing.
P.S. Glad to know I'm not the only one who lives under a rock! ;)
WOO HOO! This from the Do the Write Thing blog:
Thanks to You
We just crossed the $5000 mark for flood relief in middle Tennessee.
We are absolutely overwhelmed with the generosity of this community. From the over-the-top, one-of-a-kind donations that keep rolling in, to the good-natured back-and-forth teasing in the auction comments (I mean, I hope y'all are joking about the personal injury stuff), and especially the MAD promotion going down via blogs, Twitter and Facebook - Book People are rocking our lives right now.
But most importantly, you're changing lives for those who have lost so much.
We'd like to give each and every one of you a smooshy hug and a cupcake, but we can't. Even given our chosen professions, adequate words fail us.
So thank you.
Just thank you.
Love,
Victoria/Amanda/Myra
WOW. This is just amazing isn't it? I love that these three amazing writers have managed to get the word out about destruction widely ignored by the national media AND are actually helping raise money to help. It blows my mind. Great post!!!
Wow this is amazing, I can't believe there are so many things being added, truly amazing!!
Yeah, I didn't know there was a flood either! And I can't believe how awesome this auction is going.
In your honour and in the honour of wall the Writwrs and Poets, I published an ilustration.
This is like reliving the Cedar Rapids floods in 2008 all over again. Google it and you'll see an eerie similarity to the photos.
Cedar Rapids was national news for a day or two and then ... nothing. Same thing is happening to Nashville. It's sad, but without the media coverage the average American will assume everything is fine since the waters have receded.
But it's not. There will be mountains of garbage piled in the streets that will boggle your mind. These families will have lost EVERYTHING. The cleanup and recovery process will take YEARS.
But none of that will be in the news. Hurricane season will be here soon, or there'll be a tornado outbreak or some other big story will push Nashville off center stage...but the need will be as big as ever.
(Stepping off soapbox)...this is an amazing thing people are doing. Give if you can. It all helps!
It's comforting to see people coming together to help.
